Hundreds of police personnel have been deployed in India’s capital as opposition parties prepare to march against the country’s election chief.
Thousands of young protesters and opposition parties staged protests in the national capital and Mumbai on Sunday, demanding the resignation of Election Commission Chief Gyanesh Kumar, as police detained demonstrators for a third consecutive day.
The outcome is a stunning blow for Modi, who had predicted his party and its allies would capture more than two-thirds of all seats in this election. The opposition bloc spearheaded by the Indian National Congress performed far better than predicted with its appeal to voters who felt left out of India’s growth story.
Hundreds of security personnel fanned out on Tuesday in the heart of the Indian capital, with barricades thrown up ahead of an opposition march to demand the resignation of the election chief over a controversial revision of voter lists.
